Selecting The Right Designer For You

  • Do the pictures, graphics and other visual elements contribute to the site's message?
  • Is it easy to read and understand?
  • Does it motivate you to do business with the company?
  • Is it easy to navigate from one page to another within the site?
  • If the web pages are slow, the designer may have gone overboard with graphics and animation.
  • Compare Costs...Remember the old adage, you get what you pay for. If their prices are sky high, you may want to compare some more. Fees vary depending on the site's complexity. Make sure you understand what you're getting for your money.
  • Check them out...Check out the designer's reputation with your Better Business Bureau.
Meet Face-To-Face, if possible
  • Is the designer a good listener? If not, how can they possibly help your business? While a designer can't be expected to be an expert in your business, he should at least have a basic understanding of what you do.
  • Is the designer able to explain things so that you understand? You need to understand what he does in order to make an educated decision. If you don't understand, ask. It's your business, your money.
  • Is the designer someone you will enjoy working with? Are you comfortable talking with him/her? And do you feel you can trust him/her? Your web site is an investment in both time and money. It takes time to design a site well, and it should be regularly maintained. You want to be able to spend time working with your designer without being uncomfortable.
Check References...Get names of clients you can call and consider the following:
  • Were the results what the client expected?
  • Was the project delivered on time...within budget? If not, why not?
  • Were issues addressed promptly?
  • Was the client/designer relationship comfortable?
